News from Joanne McCartney: Urgent review into illegal use of A10 bus lane

Created on
02 February 2016

London Assembly Member Joanne McCartney AM has been informed by the Mayor of London that Transport for London (TfL) has launched an urgent review of the illegal driving in the bus lane on the A10, between Lister Gardens and the A10/A406 roundabout. This comes after Ms McCartney raised the issue with the Mayor at January’s Mayor’s Question Time following numerous complaints and concerns from local residents and cyclists who fear the illegal usage of the bus lane could lead to a tragic accident.

The review, to be completed by March 2016, will look into the safety of the bus lane along the A10 between Lister Gardens and the A10/A406 roundabout following concerns raised by local residents and cyclists who are apprehensive that a serious accident could occur.

The bus lane is in effect Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm yet a number of drivers ignore the restriction causing danger for cyclists and resulting in difficulties for law-abiding motorists manoeuvring into the inside lane due to the congestion which ensues.

Ms McCartney first reported this issue to TfL in July 2015 and, after little action was taken, raised it directly with the Mayor of London at Mayor’s Question Time on January 20th this year.

Local Labour London Assembly Member Joanne McCartney AM said:

“I welcome the urgent review that TfL are undertaking into the safety of the A10 bus lane between Lister Gardens and the A10/A406 roundabout.

“It is about time TfL and the Mayor took the safety of this road seriously. This is not the first time I have raised the issue of the illegal use of the bus lane with TfL and the Mayor, and this is not the only complaint that has been raised with regards to the safety of this road.

“I wait to see the results of the review and what measures TfL will put in place to ensure the safety of this road, especially for cyclists who are particularly vulnerable along this stretch of the road, and to prevent motorist illegally driving in the bus lane leading to traffic jams.”
