News from Joanne McCartney: Joanne welcomes commitment to get Great Northern devolution moving
The Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps MP, has responded to a letter from London Assembly Member Joanne McCartney, affirming his commitment to draw up a proposal for the devolution of Great Northern train line services.
Ms McCartney has been campaigning for a number of years for the devolution of this line to Transport for London (TfL). She has written multiple letters to the Department for Transport and raised this repeatedly with the Mayor at Mayor’s Question Time and with TfL.
In Mr Shapps’ latest response, he stated his commitment to develop a proposal to transfer these services to TfL, but added that the final decision will depend on a successful business case and the outcome of the Williams Rail Review. In April, during a London Assembly Transport Committee meeting, Ms McCartney secured a commitment from TfL that they have been preparing a bid for this line.
In her most recent letter to the new Transport Secretary, she also asked for an update on the plans to make Alexandra Palace and Palmers Green stations step- free, using funding allocated through the Government’s ‘Access For All’ scheme.
Mr Shapps’ reply confirms that the proposals for step-free access to be provided at both stations are in the process of being drawn up with more progress expected to be made towards the end of the year.
London Assembly Member for Enfield & Haringey, Joanne McCartney AM, said:
“I welcome the Minister’s commitment to work on the proposals to hand these services over. Following the recent disruption and cancellations, it is high time that passengers in Enfield and Haringey, and beyond , benefit from the improved service that Transport for London can offer.
“I am also pleased some progress has been made on improving accessibility at Palmers Green and Alexandra Palace stations. This would unlock a wider range of transport options in North London for Londoners who struggle to get around and I will continue to press for this to be delivered as soon as possible”
