News from Joanne McCartney: Enhanced community testing now in place in Tottenham

In response to the news that surge testing will now be in place in the N17 postcode, following the emergence of new cases of the South African variant, local London Assembly Member, Joanne McCartney AM, said:

“It has been concerning to see reports of more cases of the South African variant. There is a lot we still do not know about this strain, but there are indications that it could be more contagious.

“This is why it is vital that we take this opportunity to break the chain of transmission and stop it from spreading any further. As a precautionary measure, the Council are specifically urging those living in the N17 postcode to get tested, even without COVID-19 symptoms.

“From today, a mobile testing centre has been opened up at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre, and I would strongly encourage as many local people as possible, over the age of 18 and not showing any symptoms, to go there and get a test in the near future. This is a particularly important thing to do for those who are unable to work from home.

“Home testing kits will also be sent to some properties in the area from Wednesday. It is important that anyone who receives one uses it on the day it is delivered, so it is ready for doorstep collection or to be dropped off at a designated location.

“Anyone with symptoms (a new cough, a fever, or a loss or change of their sense of smell or taste) should book a test online or via NHS 119 as usual.

“Do remember that there is financial support available from the council for those who need to self-isolate and can’t work from home.

“Another vital thing we can all do is to take the vaccine when our invitation arrives, it is safe, and it is our path out of the pandemic”.
