News from Jenny Jones (past staff): Met need to tackle hate crime

Created on
04 December 2015

Figures show that, the number of Muslims attacked each week in London has more than tripled since the Paris attacks. (1)

Week ending November 10 there were 24 incidents. In the week ending November 24, this has increased to 76. (2)

Mussurut Zia from the Muslim Women's Network UK said the community was "fearful" but people of other faiths had come forward in "solidarity”. (3)

Assembly Member Jenny Jones:

“The Met Police need to see tackling hate crime as the other side of the coin of the work they are doing to tackle violent jihadists. One of the aims of terrorists attacks by ISIL/Daesh is to drive a wedge between communities and to show that our multi-cultural country is a failure by putting us at each other’s throats. The Met Police have to be seen to be protecting all citizens whatever their faith or beliefs. A failure of the Met Police to clamp down on hate crime would be seen as a victory by the terrorists.”
