Local sixth-formers scoop award for work on tackling youth violence

Pupils from Leyton Sixth Form College were recognised for their voluntary work to raise awareness of youth violence at the Team London awards ceremony at City Hall this week. The sixth-formers have been hailed for their “diligent, grass-roots approach” to amplifying the concerns of young people towards violent crime, by local London Assembly Member, Jennette Arnold OBE AM.

The Waltham Forest students were handed a ‘Young Londoner Award’ to mark the success of their listening campaign to collect the views of staff and students on local crime and youth violence.

They subsequently took these views up with representatives from Waltham Forest Council and the local police force, to highlight and find ways to address the concerns of their peers.

After the success of their campaign, the students are now leading by example and inviting other schools in Waltham Forest to develop their own anti-violence initiatives.

The awards are organised by City Hall’s volunteering programme, Team London, to highlight the achievements of Londoners who have made an outstanding contribution to helping others and improving community life in the capital.

Local London Assembly Member, Jennette Arnold OBE AM, said:

“It has been extremely concerning to see the rise in violent crime in Waltham Forest, and across London. However, in the face of tragedy, our local community has always pulled together to try and find a way to heal and move forward to tackle the underlying causes.

We should be immensely proud of these students who are leading the way locally when it comes to ensuring the views and concerns of their peers towards violent crime are heard by those in power.

“It was fantastic to see all of their efforts praised at City Hall, and I am looking forward to seeing their work replicated in other schools across the borough.
