An important step forward

I strongly welcome the Mayor’s recent announcement that vital funding will be put in place to tackle FGM and Modern Slavery in our capital. I hope that a significant portion of any funding will go towards supporting the leading community activists who are working on the ground to confront these issues head-on. I pledge my wholehearted support to my colleague Unmesh Desai AM who is taking the lead on tackling Modern Slavery today.

From my recent work with The Voice of Domestic Workers, it has become more and more apparent to me how important it is that this vast issue has the resources it needs to be solved. In their recent exhibition, it was highlighted how domestic servitude is a very real and intrinsic type of Modern Slavery in today’s society.

I am certain that this funding will help us to address all aspects of Modern Slavery, including that of migrant domestic workers. I look forward to working closely with Unmesh on this matter going forward.
