How safe are our buses and trams?

Created on
14 May 2019

Seven people tragically lost their lives and 62 more were injured in the Croydon tram crash in November 2016.

An investigation into the crash made a series of 15 recommendations to improve safety for passengers.

Between quarter three of 2018/2019, there were 1,098 injuries related to buses. Of these injuries, 20% required hospital treatment.

Tomorrow, the London Assembly Transport Committee will be investigating bus and tram safety.

The meeting will be in two halves. The first half will focus on tram safety and the additional safety measures TfL has introduced following the Croydon tram derailment in 2016.

The guests are:

  • Jill Collis, Director of Health Safety and Environment, TfL
  • Jonathan Fox, Director of Rail and Sponsored Services, TfL
  • Finn Brennan, District Organiser, ASLEF
  • Representative from First Group

The second half will focus on bus safety and will examine the progress TfL has made since the committee’s 2017 report ‘Driven to distraction – tackling safety on London’s buses’.

The guests are:

  • Claire Mann, Director of Bus Operations, TfL
  • Stuart Reid, Interim Director of Vision Zero, TfL
  • Tony Wilson, Managing Director, Abellio
  • Sinisa Cica, Unite
  • Tom Kearney, Founder, #LondonBusWatch, Transparency and Corporate Governance Campaign

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 15 May 2019 at 10:00am in Committee Room 5 (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
