In response to the news that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been approved for use in the UK, Labour’s London Assembly Health Spokesperson, Dr Onkar Sahota AM, said:

“This is a game-changing moment which will enable us to get ahead of the surging spread of the virus if we can hit the target of two million vaccinations per week.

“What sets this vaccine apart is that doses can be stored in a standard fridge, making it a lot easier for GP surgeries and care homes to roll it out to the most vulnerable in our communities.

“Now that it has been proved to be perfectly safe, I would urge everyone eligible to take up their invitation to get the vaccine when the time comes.

“In the meantime, we face a very stark situation in London, with hospitals and GP surgeries overwhelmed by an unprecedented spike in cases. We now have a glimpse of some light at the end of the tunnel and a path for getting back to normal and rebuilding our economy, but we must stick to the rules and avoid falling at the final hurdle”.
