News from Dr Onkar Sahota: Vaccine supply chains must be fixed, as GPs given bigger role

In response to the Prime Minister’s announcement that GP surgeries will play a more central role in the national vaccination programme, Labour’s London Assembly Health Spokesperson, Dr Onkar Sahota AM, said:

“This will be a huge stride forward for the vaccination programme in the capital and it is something I have been calling for since the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was approved. GP surgeries know their communities inside-out, are well placed to tackle vaccine hesitancy amongst their patients and will provide a more local option for the most vulnerable to get to in order to receive their doses.

“With the arrival of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, we must not see a repeat of the same mistakes being made right now with supplying the vaccination hubs. Staff at these hubs have had little room to plan ahead as the delivery and quantity of vaccine shipments has been all over the place, leading to doses being wasted.

“The Government must urgently get a grip on this, there is too much at stake to allow for any further mismanagement or confusion over the logistics”.
