International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The Day celebrates women's achievements and increases the visibility of their successes around the world. This year’s theme is ‘Choose to Challenge’ which encourages people to challenge their perception of women through conversation. Navin Shah AM, Chair of the London Assembly, said:
“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to remember the triumphs of women past and present, from the suffragettes winning the vote over a century ago to the women making waves in London today. This year’s theme of challenging expectations is a fitting way to mark those achievements.
“Throughout the years, International Women’s Day has helped to shape a more gender equal world but it serves as a reminder that we still have a way to go. The commitment to inclusivity that we see around our city gives us hope that true gender equality is a step closer with every day that goes by.”
