News from Caroline Russell: ‘Dad’s army’ approach to climate change

10 July 2019

Lord Deben, chair of the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) today described the Government’s approach to tackling climate change ‘like a Dad’s Army. We can’t possibly go on with this ramshackle system; it doesn’t begin to face the issues. It is a real threat to the population’.

The CCC released its 2019 Progress Report to Parliament today [1], saying that the UK is:

•    not ready even the minimum expected level of global warming and no proper plans for surface water flooding and impacts of high temperature
•    only one of the 25 emissions cutting policies has been delivered in full
•    carbon reduction targets for 2025 and 2030 likely to be missed by an even bigger margin than last year.

Caroline Russell’s London Assembly motion called for the Mayor of London to declare a climate emergency and to bring forward his 2050 zero carbon target to 2030. [2]

She also published a report comparing the current climate change risks for London to those in a 1.5°C scenario. [3]

Caroline Russell said:

This shows an out of touch and hopeless government, just as time for urgent action to prevent dangerous climate change is rapidly running out.

One action that the Government could take right now, is to drop their climate wrecking massive expansion at Heathrow.
