Assembly stands with the people of Ukraine

The Ukraine flag raised under a cloudy sky
Created on
03 March 2022

The London Assembly stands united with Ukrainian Londoners and most especially with the people of Ukraine in condemning the current invasion led by Vladimir Putin.

The Assembly has today called on the Mayor to make urgent representations to the Home Office to increase support for refugees fleeing Ukraine without delay.

Len Duvall OBE AM, who proposed the motion said:

“The invasion of Ukraine at the hands of Vladimir Putin has left the world watching in horror as cities are destroyed, innocent civilians are killed and millions are displaced.

“London stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and all Ukrainians living in our capital.

“This is a humanitarian crisis and the Government must now follow the example of our European neighbours and create a more straightforward route to those fleeing the country and seeking sanctuary. London stands ready to welcome refugees”.

The full text of the motion is:

This Assembly notes with significant concern the escalating situation in the Ukraine and condemns the invasion led by Vladimir Putin leading to death, destruction and displacement of millions.

This Assembly stands united with the Ukrainian people and Ukrainian Londoners and we stand shoulder to shoulder with the Mayor of Kyiv.

We recognise and thank the Mayor of London for meeting the Ukrainian ambassador and the Prime Minister for speaking with the President of Ukraine. We would also like to thank the many Londoners who have collected much needed supplies and made financial contributions for the people of Ukraine.

The Home Secretary has announced a new humanitarian sponsorship pathway and the Assembly urgently seeks further details of this scheme.

We call on the Mayor to make urgent representations to the Home Office to increase its offer of support for refugees without delay, which has so far been inadequate and leaves those fleeing Ukraine at serious risk.
