£100,000 Team London fund to boost volunteering via technology

Created on
13 May 2013

Team London is the Mayor of London’s volunteering initiative that aims to get everyone in the capital helping out in their communities.

Organisations applying for the grants can use technology in a number of ways to engage with volunteers, from creating apps to targeting corporate volunteers or students by building a presence via online publications.

The Mayor hopes the Fund will get projects thinking creatively about recruiting and maintaining volunteering as part of his wider work, led by senior Volunteering Adviser Veronica Wadley, to maintain the unprecedented volunteering momentum of the 2012 Games.

The Mayor, Boris Johnson said: “We have projects crying out for volunteers across the city, with simply no means of reaching hundreds of people who could get on board and help. This Fund will help raise the profile of projects and really target the kinds of people with the skill sets they need to expand and succeed. “

Team London wants to support projects that help Londoners get back into work and provide skills training, help the environment or engage young people through coaching and mentoring. More information on applying for grants is available on the Team London websitehttp://volunteerteam.london.gov.uk .

The closing date for applications for the grant is Monday 10th June.

Other plans for Team London this year include:

• London Ambassadors returning to top visitor sites across the capital to help visitors and Londoners from July 27th – September 11th

• Team London Ambassadors placed in primary and secondary schools in London to help inspire young people to volunteer

• Ensuring unemployed young people are a key part of the volunteers' programme, helping support the UEFA Champions League Final in May and at other major sporting and cultural events in London. They will also benefit from skills training.

Notes to editors

1, To be eligible, organisations must be registered on the Team London website and advertising (or plan to advertise) opportunities on the site, or taking a feed from it. The Team London website helps drive volunteers into impactful activity and also makes volunteering a better experience by enabling them to track hours and maintain a volunteering CV (useful to help unemployed volunteers get back into work.) 2, Team London was inspired by Mayor Bloomberg's Cities of Service model in New York. Cities of Service was founded by Mayor Bloomberg and 16 other Mayors from across the United States to help them leverage citizen service strategies to address local needs and make local government more effective, Cities of Service builds on the success of the initiative in New York City . The coalition now includes more than 100 mayors representing nearly 50 million Americans.
