Summary of petition
“As local residents of Tower Hamlets and Newham, we are deeply concerned about the proposed toll charge for the Blackwall Tunnel stated to take effect in 2025. This toll charge will significantly impact our daily lives - from commuting to work to accessing local amenities.
The Blackwall Tunnel is a vital artery in our community and imposing a toll charge would place an unnecessary financial burden on us. The Office for National Statistics reports that Tower Hamlet and surrounding areas has one of the highest levels of income deprivation affecting children and older people. Adding a tunnel toll would exacerbate this issue.
We understand that measures need to be taken to manage traffic flow and fund infrastructure maintenance. However, we believe there are other ways to achieve these goals without disproportionately impacting local residents who rely on this route daily.
We urge Transport for London and relevant authorities to reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions that do not involve imposing a toll charge on everyday commuters using the Blackwall Tunnel.
Please sign this petition if you stand with us against these proposed charges. Your signature can make a difference in preserving our community's accessibility and affordability.”
