Given that over 600,000 (two in five children) are growing up in poverty in London, with the rate rising to one in two children in Inner London, how are you supporting work between JobCentre Plus and Local Authorities to tackle poverty, through schemes to increase in part time working, particularly for lone parents, improving wages, skills and training and development opportunities?

  • Question by: Mike Tuffrey
  • Meeting date: 30 January 2008
Over 35% of patients reported that they were not given enough to eat while in hospital; 41% of patients found the food disappointing; and one in five of staff serving meals said they would be unhappy to eat the food provided for patients. How will your Food Strategy contribute to improving the standard of the food served in London's hospitals?

Childhood Obesity in London

  • Reference: 2008/0090
  • Question by: Mike Tuffrey
  • Meeting date: 30 January 2008
In some parts of the capital, as many as one in eight children are obese by the time they start school, with 13% of five year olds in Southwark classed as "dangerously overweight" and 24% of 10 year olds in the City and the borough of Hackney as morbidly obese. How will your Food Strategy tackle the problem of childhood obesity in London?

Green Homes Scheme

  • Question by: Mike Tuffrey
  • Meeting date: 30 January 2008
How could you improve your Green Homes scheme to incentivise social landlords to make energy saving improvements to their properties, given that they do not necessarily receive a direct benefit from such home improvements but whose tenants are likely to be fuel poor?

Green Homes Scheme

  • Reference: 2008/0088
  • Question by: Mike Tuffrey
  • Meeting date: 30 January 2008
How could you improve your Green Homes scheme to specifically target Londoners living in fuel poverty who are unlikely to be able to meet the up-front costs of home improvements but who are more likely to benefit from them in terms of lower utility bills?

Decent Environmental Standard

  • Reference: 2008/0087
  • Question by: Mike Tuffrey
  • Meeting date: 30 January 2008
Do you consider that your intention to introduce a Decent Environmental Standard for homes, to be reached by 2016, could be more ambitious and done from 2011, considering it is a standard that is already being achieved elsewhere in the EU, such as Germany? What additional political and financial resources will you need to achieve this more ambitious target and how will you gain them?
