A BIS survey carried out in May 2012 found that apprentices in London were significantly less inclined (76% compared with 87% nationally) to state that they were 'very likely' to complete their course; what efforts are you making to ensure not just a high number of apprenticeships in London, but apprenticeships of high quality?

  • Question by: Stephen Knight
  • Meeting date: 21 November 2012
I note that, whilst the number of people undertaking apprenticeships in London has increased over the past few years, some Boroughs fare worse than others. In particular, the Boroughs of Islington, Wandsworth, Hammersmith & Fulham, Bromley and Kensington & Chelsea currently have a low number of apprentices in comparison to their population of young people. What are you doing to increase the uptake of apprenticeships in these areas?

What efforts are you making to increase the number of apprenticeships in the arts, media and publishing?

Olympic Underspend and Local Businesses:

  • Reference: 2012/3398
  • Question by: Stephen Knight
  • Meeting date: 21 November 2012
It is suggested that a small portion of the £377 million underspend in the Public Sector Funding Package for the 2012 Games should be passed on to businesses who were affected financially by the Games. Will you consider lobbying HM Treasury for a portion of these reserves to go to small businesses that suffered, for example as a result of poor signage to high streets, parking restrictions or being miss-sold retail space?
