I understand that you cannot comment on an ongoing investigation, however, following the atrocious footage which emerged online at the end of January of a man filming schoolchildren walking home in Tower Hamlets, how important is it that members of the public report footage such as this, or any form of hate crime they see posted online, to the police?

Online hate crime (1)

  • Reference: 2019/3854
  • Question by: Unmesh Desai
  • Meeting date: 25 February 2019
We have recently seen the Petitions Committee in parliament look into ‘online abuse and the experience of disabled people’. The committee advised that the Government must review the experience of disabled people when reporting crimes and giving evidence and that too many disabled people have not been treated seriously because frontline officers and staff do not understand disability. Are the Met Police working proactively to try and improve their practice in this area?

Policing outside of parliament

  • Reference: 2019/3853
  • Question by: Unmesh Desai
  • Meeting date: 25 February 2019
I was concerned to see the lack of action taken by Metropolitan Police Officers outside of Parliament following the abuse of MPs and other public figures. I welcome the comments made by Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu in an interview with LBC radio in which he said: ‘We needed to be more assertive, we’ve put that in place. I think nobody should be prevented from going about their normal business and getting into their normal place of work whether a parliamentarian or not. What we saw happen on television was unacceptable and we should have been more assertive.” Do you agree...
