Closure of Manchester Square Fire Station (Supplementary) [8]

  • Question by: Angie Bray
  • Meeting date: 08 November 2006
It would only work if you were plugged in with it, would it not?

The perception of the residents in that area does not fit exactly with what you have been saying. They feel that the cover that they are offered is lacking because the fire engines have to come from further afield. Not only that but one appliance has been lost from Euston. Therefore, it might be a perception which is not borne out by your figures, but nevertheless they do feel that they are at risk, and that the cover has diminished.

So you are not really interested in talking to them about their proposal?

Thanks for that reply and I am pleased to hear you will meet with them because one thing that does concern me in that area -

Well I am disappointed then. My concern is that there are as large number of flats, new places being opened in the area; Abbey National, Marks & Spencer and all the rest of them are turning into flats. That is a concern because the Marylebone Association is quite clear that they feel there should be a fire station there, they feel they have the potential support of people like Frank Dobson, MP for Holborn - who I gather has written to you about it - the Duke of Westminster, possible the new West End company, all sorts of people have...

  • Question by: Angie Bray

I was never saying the outer Boroughs should continue to have less. What I argued for was that London as a whole should have more which would mean that everybody could enjoy more, rather than some having to then lose some in order for others to gain some. It just seemed to me we were trying to cut the cake smaller. My final point would be, are you aware, Sir Ken, that the residents in the area are continuing to put together new rescue plans, and that right now they say they are talking to the Metropolitan Police about sharing...

So the Chair (of LFEPA) was not right to say that it was to do with cost of refurbishing?

Closure of Manchester Square Fire Station (Supplementary) [1]

  • Question by: Angie Bray
  • Meeting date: 08 November 2006
I think it is a bit rich coming from my colleague, Mr Hulme Cross, given that he actually voted for the closure of the fire station on LFEPA so there are a bit of crocodile tears going on there I suspect, whereas I, as the local Assembly Member for the constituency, have at all time reflected my concerns about this closure. I recognise what you are saying, that things are not as bad perhaps as they had been predicted, and indeed remain well within your target areas. However, the point that my residents would make is that rather than having...

London Resilience Funding (Supplementary) [7]

  • Question by: Brian Coleman
  • Meeting date: 08 November 2006
So, in other words the Government has asked you to take the lead on the matter but not provided any money to do so?

  • Question by: Geoff Pope
  • Meeting date: 08 November 2006
You wrote a very comprehensive letter to the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and got a response from Mike Reid at the Fire and Resilience Policy Division. On two occasions in his letter he says these are `local operational matters'; the question of buying additional fire rescue units. So the Policy Division on Resilience calls this a `local operational matter'. Are we getting through to them at all?
