Transport Safer Neighbourhood Teams (Supplementary) [6]

  • Question by: Richard Barnes
  • Meeting date: 18 November 2006
Why now, Mr Mayor? Why not six months ago when you also had the money to do this?

You could not guarantee there will not be some confusion, but there is still a chance, at this early stage, to be quite clear on the rules of engagement. There have been two recent statements first of all from TfL saying that these PCSOs could be deployed to different parts of London on a weekly basis, so one wonders under what circumstances. Yet, we also had a statement on 5 October from the MPS which stated that the teams will be ring fenced from abstractions. So why is it you are allowing these two quite different views to predominate?

So we are clear there will be no confusion?

Are these going to be under local Borough Command, as against TfL?

You have covered the ground, to some extent, on this one.

I cannot help but notice Val Shawcross' question which follows this, on CCTV footage. Are you happy that people are working integratedly across the transport system, to provide this safe system? I get reports also from my constituents that they are fearful of using the night buses because of the crime and the sheer atmosphere, and I get that from youngsters.

I do not suggest you name that person, because you might get a writ as a result.

Can I ask you, then, to specify exactly the nature of your offer, both in capital and revenue terms?

  • Question by: Bob Blackman
  • Meeting date: 18 November 2006
In December 2003, shortly before the 2004 mayoral elections, you made a promise to fund the refurbishment of Dollis Hill House, which is a Grade II listed building in your old parliamentary constituency. That promise has never been fulfilled over the last three years. What confidence can we have that the promise you have made now is going to be fulfilled?

You are obviously reading the local paper as opposed to reading the Executive minutes. What we did do was to agree a consultation - and you are very clear on consultation, and the results of consultation, as we know - on the future uses and redevelopment of the house, including all options, including redevelopment. So we will take your offer up and no doubt you will be hearing further from us.
