VE Day 80: A Celebration to Remember

The GLA was involved in the planning and delivery of the events for the Victory in Europe (VE) 80th anniversary. The GLA provided pan-London situational awareness, contributed to pre-event pan-London coordination preparedness, and participated in coordination during the events.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), in collaboration with BBC Studios, held a concert on Horse Guards Parade, on the evening of Thursday 8 May 2025 as part of the UK Government’s plans to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The GLA was invited to send representatives to attend the concert as a key part of the delivery planning for the UK’s commemorations. The GLA accepted 52 tickets. There was no cost for the GLA for these tickets. The tickets had no monetary value. Tickets were made available to London Assembly Members, to GLA staff via ballots, and to external stakeholders.
Home Run Derby X
9 July 2022
The GLA has been working with Major League Baseball (MLB) and has secured a series of three MLB games in 2023, 2024 and 2026. In recognition of the ongoing partnership, 400 tickets for MLBs Home Run Derby X held on Saturday 9 July 2022 at Crystal Palace Park were made available to the GLA at no cost to the organisation. These tickets were promoted to staff via internal channels and made available on a first-come-first-served basis.
Queens Platinum Jubilee Pageant

The GLA was involved in the planning and delivery of the central weekend of events for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The GLA provided pan-London situational awareness as well as being central to pre-event pan London coordination preparedness.
On Sunday 5 June 2022 for the Queens Platinum Jubilee Pageant, the grandstand seating around Queen’s Victoria Memorial were allocated to trusted partner organisations. As a partner the GLA were allocated 20 pairs of tickets. There was no cost to the GLA for these tickets. These tickets had no monetary value as the event was free to access and no tickets were sold for this event. Tickets were made available to London Assembly Members and GLA staff via a ballot.
UEFA EURO 2020 Final England vs Italy at Wembley
11 July 2021
As London was a UEFA Euro 2020 Host City, the GLA received an allocation of tickets to games played at Wembley Stadium. Six tickets to the final game between England and Italy were provided to six GLA staff members via a ballot.
The Mayor of London’s Gala: 63rd BFI London Film Festival
7 October 2019
Every year, the Mayor of London, via the GLA, part funds the London Film Festival using an annual grant fund to Film London. As part of the festival, the Mayor chooses a UK premier film for his Gala screening at the Odeon Leicester Square, London.
In 2019, the film was ‘The Aeronauts’ directed by Tom Harper and the GLA received a number of tickets for the screening and the evening reception at no extra cost to the organisation.
Tickets were made available to GLA culture stakeholders, London Assembly members and GLA staff on a first come first served basis.
For the 63rd BFI London Film Festival, the GLA received:
- 6 tickets for the opening Gala on 2 October 2019
- an allocation of 64 tickets for the 7 October 2019 Gala screening
- 6 tickets for the closing Gala on 13 October 2019.
Major League Baseball London Series 2019
29 and 30 June 2019
The GLA provided promotional support to the organisers of the Major League Baseball (MLB) London Series 2019. The GLA received 50 general access tickets for the workout day and 114 general access tickets for the event at no cost to the organisation. These tickets were distributed to winners of the London Sport Awards and GLA staff via a ballot.
ICC Cricket World Cup
30 May – 14 July 2019
The GLA was involved in providing promotional and operational support to the organisers of the ICC Cricket World Cup. The GLA supported city activations before and during the tournament and supported the 10 matches which took place within London, either at The Oval or Lord’s cricket ground between 30 May and 14 July 2019.
The GLA received 1,242 general access tickets for the event at no cost to the organisation. These tickets were distributed to GLA stakeholders, community organisations, Lambeth Council, Westminster City Council and GLA staff. Of these tickets, 12 pairs were allocated to GLA staff via a ballot.
FINA/CNSG Diving World Series
17 – 19 May 2019
The GLA provided funding, promotional and strategic support to British Swimming, the organisers of the FINA/CNSG Diving World Series 2019. The GLA received 60 general access tickets for the event at no cost to the organisation. These tickets were distributed to GLA staff via a ballot.
The Mayor of London’s Gala: 62nd BFI London Film Festival

Every year, the Mayor of London, via the GLA, part funds the British Film Institute (BFI) using an annual grant fund. As part of the festival, the Mayor choses a UK premier film for his Gala screening at the Odeon Leicester Square, London.
In 2018, the film was ‘A Private War’ directed by Matthew Heineman. The GLA received a number of tickets for the screening the pre-reception at no extra cost to the organisation.
Tickets were made available to GLA culture stakeholders, London Assembly members and GLA staff on a first-come-first-served basis.
For the 62nd BFI London Film Festival, the GLA received:
- 6 tickets for the opening gala on 10 October 2018
- an allocation of 75 tickets for the 20 October 2018 Gala screening
- 6 tickets for the closing gala on 21 October 2018.
2018 Street League Skateboarding Pro Open London
26 and 27 May 2018
The GLA was involved in providing financial, promotional and operational support to Street League Skateboarding (SLS) in delivering the 2018 SLS Pro Open London at the Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, between 26 and 27 May 2018.
The GLA received 25 general access tickets for the event at no cost to the organisation. These tickets were distributed to GLA staff and stakeholders.
Secret Cinema presents 'Blade Runner: The Final Cut'
21 June and 24 June 2018
Secret Cinema productions offer audiences world-class cinema experiences in non-traditional venues, creating a 360-degree environment populated by a professional cast of actors and dancers. With around half a million audience members attending over 70 events worldwide, it is a great example of London's innovative creative exports.
A 2017 study from BOP Consulting highlighted the local positive impact of a Secret Cinema in terms of the regeneration of an area and the GLA is directly involved with the Secret Group Limited team to help them improve and enhance their local community engagement.
Secret Group Limited's production, 'Blade Runner: The Final Cut', took place in a GLA-owned building in Canning Town. GLA Land and Property Limited, a subsidiary company of the GLA, contracted a lease with Secret Group Limited on 3 January 2017, originally for one year, with an extension until October 2018. The GLA received 19 tickets for the 21 June and 15 tickets for the 24 June 2018 performances of 'Blade Runner: The Final Cut' at no extra cost to the organisation. Tickets are made available to the Culture team and Regeneration team staff on a first-come-first-served basis.

For the 61st BFI London Film Festival the GLA received:
- 6 tickets for the opening gala on 4 October
- an allocation of 75 tickets for the 9th October Gala screening
- 8 tickets for the closing gala on 15 October 2017.
World Para Athletics Championships and IAAF World Championships London
July and August 2017
Responsibility for delivering the World Para Athletics Championships and IAAF World Championships London 2017 fell under two limited companies: London 2017 Ltd (IAAF Championships) and London Championships Ltd (World Para Athletics Championships).
The GLA and UK Athletics are the two members of both companies. As underwriter and majority grant funder of the World Para Athletics Championships, and as a major grant funder of the IAAF World Championships, the GLA was heavily involved in the operational delivery of both events.
The GLA received a number of accreditations for both events, both to facilitate the attendance of senior representatives of the organisation, and to enable staff to perform functional roles during the event.
The GLA received a number of general access tickets for the events at no cost to the organisation. For the World Para Athletics World Championships, the GLA received 16,000 general access tickets at no cost to the organisation. These tickets were distributed to emergency service personnel in London and to GLA staff.
The GLA received a number of VIP guest passes for the events at no cost to the organisation. The GLA used the VIP guest passes to host a number of stakeholder/partner reception at the events. For the World Para Athletics World Championships, the GLA received a total 180 VIP guest passes and associated tickets split across ten sessions of the event.
For the IAAF World Championships, the GLA received a total 54 VIP guest passes and associated tickets split across two sessions of the event.
