Crossrail 2 is needed to boost London’s economy and reduce overcrowding, the London Assembly said in its consultation response for Crossrail 2. The Committee felt that a regional route concentrating on Greater London would have more benefits for the capital, and help the capital's economy by up to £49 billion.
The response said that the new rail route it is needed to cope with London’s rapid population growth, which is forecast to approach 10 million by 2031. Levels of Tube congestion previously predicted for 2031 might be reached as early as 2020, putting significant pressure on London’s transport network.
