New polling proves it: Londoners need more toilets on TfL network

New polling shows that 74% of respondents believe that there should be more toilets on the Transport for London (TfL) network. Conducted by YouGov, this polling indicates a clear, widespread belief that toilet provision across London and TfL services is insufficient.  

The data particularly demonstrates support for more toilets across a vast range of demographic groups. Marginalised groups, especially older Londoners, were particularly vocal regarding the need for more toilets. Outer Londoners and Inner Londoners also agree: more toilets are needed. 

While there has been significant progress in securing funding from the Mayor in his recent budget, there has nonetheless been criticism of the adequacy of the funding compared to the scale of the problem. This follows from years of campaigning, with Caroline Russell AM having spearheaded this issue since 2016, calling both for better funding from the Mayor, as well as for the government to recognise toilet provision as a statutory duty.  

Commenting on the polling, Caroline Russell AM said: 

“The consensus is clear. From inner-Londoners to outer-Londoners, from older people to children, from workers on the move to people with disabilities: Londoners want more public toilets. 

“The Mayor must act like this is a priority, Londoners are telling him loud and clear to give toilets the funding they need. 

“There is an absolute necessity for the government to classify toilet access as a statutory duty for local authorities to provide. In the meantime, the Mayor and TfL need to step up. Public toilets need better funding, better sign-positing, greater accessibility and a clear strategy for getting the toilets Londoners need onto the TfL network as soon as possible.”
