Motion detail

Bassam Mahfouz AM moved, and James Small-Edwards AM seconded the following motion:

“This Assembly wishes the England men’s football team the best of luck for the knockout stages of the World Cup.

This England squad has players in it from all walks of life, including Djed Spence the first Muslim to represent England men’s team and Marcus Rashford whose campaigning secured free meals for children during school holidays. The team really demonstrates that diversity is our greatest strength.

More than a third of England’s 26-man squad is from London and our city should be very proud of their performances in the tournament so far.

The Assembly wishes to put on record its thanks to the team for representing the best of our nation and capital city and we hope to see them replicate the sort of success the women’s team has achieved and bring the trophy back to London.

The Assembly further believes that the Greater London Authority should visibly support the national team during the World Cup and, therefore, calls on the Mayor of London to fly the St George's flag at City Hall for the remainder of England's participation in the tournament.”

Following debate and upon being put to a vote, the motion was agreed unanimously.
