Statement from the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime

The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) has today referred a complaint concerning the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

It relates to the Commissioner’s public comments and alleged actions in relation to a senior officer, who is the subject of an ongoing IOPC complaint investigation. MOPAC was asked to consider the complaint as the appropriate authority for dealing with complaints against the Commissioner. These responsibilities are discharged by MOPAC’s Chief Executive.

In line with IOPC guidance, MOPAC has made a mandatory referral to the IOPC which does not mean an IOPC investigation will necessarily follow. The IOPC will determine whether there is an indication that the Commissioner may have committed a criminal offence or behaved in a way which would justify the bringing of disciplinary proceedings. If there is, the IOPC will decide whether there should be an investigation. If not, the complaint will be passed back to MOPAC to deal with in a reasonable and proportionate manner.
