Mayor's statement on the anniversary of the murder of Zara Aleena

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “My thoughts and prayers are with Zara Aleena’s family and friends, and women and girls everywhere who I know were so deeply impacted by her murder one year ago today.

“Zara was a remarkable young woman who through the inspiring life she led demonstrated a strong sense of justice. And, as a society, we now owe it to her to deliver it.

“Justice demands action and far-reaching, systemic change. As a society we have a duty and responsibility to fix the failings that put women in danger so that nothing like Zara's murder can ever happen again.

“The best possible tribute we could ever pay to Zara is to shape a future free from male violence. A future where women can live safely and confidently – not with fear, but with hope, ambition and the freedom to flourish. As Mayor, I will not rest until that future is secured and will continue to do everything in my power to build a safer London for everyone.”
