Celebrating Transgender Awareness Week

We are celebrating Transgender Awareness Week 2018 to raise the visibility of transgender and gender non-conforming people, and address the issues the community faces. It is a time for transgender people and their allies to take action and bring attention to the community by educating the public and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that transgender people face.

Stonewall’s LGBT in Britain; Trans Report looks at the many ways Trans people are still being discriminated against in the UK, and the need for immediate change. When findings show that ‘two in five trans people and three in ten non-binary people have experience a hate crime or incident because of their gender identity’, it is clear that not enough is being done to keep trans people safe. UK LGBT+ rights charity Stonewall are asking people to join them and support their campaign - 'Come Out For Trans Equality', to show that people across Britain support trans people's right to be accepted and live their lives free from hate.

Trans Awareness Week finishes on 20 November with the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which was started by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to commemorate all the trans people lost to violence that year. This year City Hall are flying the trans flag to mark the day.

What we are doing at the GLA?

The GLA strives to be an inclusive employer and wants to lead by example, which is why earlier this year we published a new Trans and Gender Identity policy to support our trans and non-binary staff. 

Throughout the year we have organised workshops and events centred around Trans awareness and education. We have also run Stonewall Role Models training for GLA group staff who identify as LGBT+ and will be running an Allies training session later this month. 

We are always trying to improve as an organisation and continue to show our support for the Trans community.
