Vernadskii - Matter and mind
Description:
I chose to make this piece for a scientist called Vladimir Vernadskii who advanced the biology and philosophy we know today. I chose him for his piece as I believe he contributed greatly to our society and many scientists just like him deserve the same recognition. From person to person and thought to thought they accumulate an understanding of the current world and how to improve it for future generations. Vernadskii, for example, had an ambitious vision for the future. He argued that rising powers like human cognition, science and technology could become natural processes and that scientific thought and human collaboration would eventually lead to a balanced and sustainable planetary system and a final complementary relationship between humanity and nature. This was part of his study of the noosphere-the sphere of human consciousness and mental activity and its influence to biology. These seemingly outdated and historic ideas are still brought up in conversation today, and with all scientists thoughts and ideas we can build up a stable foundation of knowledge to improve our society. I made this ceramic piece by using sgraffito for face and and slabs to make the flask. I think the sgraffito was effective by adding texture to his hair, beard and wrinkles.
