Tarpan horse grazing
Description:
My fourth plinth proposal is a digital drawing for a sculpture of a wild Tarpan horse grazing. My reasoning behind this idea is that the plinth was always designed for King William the fourth sitting on horseback and for that reason it is larger than the two southern plinths. Similarly, Trafalgar square was previously the site of the royal mews which obviously means that there would once have been horse stables aplenty there hence it has a historical connection with horses. I also want to highlight the importance of wild horses and how they help to fertilize soil which has been proven by a close species of Tarpan, Konik, which is now making a comeback and is used in many conservational grazing projects around the country. In pretty much all depictions of horses we have, either illustrative or sculptural, they are being portrayed ridden, preparing for battle, held in captivity or anything else to do with human interaction. You very rarely see a picture or sculpture of a horse just being a horse, minding its own business. This sculpture is different. Unfortunately, wild Tarpan, once a sight taken for granted on the land where London now is, are now extinct due to human interference- we drove them from their natural habitat and forced them into domestication through selective breeding. The final Tarpan horse died in 1909, held in captivity in the Russian empire, leaving us with only one known illustration from life which, coincidentally, was produced in 1841, the same year as the construction of the fourth plinth.

The Lone Fish
Description:
I found this type of fish (The Royal Gamma) in an old sticker book, and I found it quite interesting. It has a range of colours with vivid hues of blue, yellow, pink, and purple which strikingly contrast with the stark black from the oil pastels which I think embodies 'the lone fish' well. And I like how the fish stands out even when in the darkest depths.

Justice for Women in History
Description:
My ceramic piece is inspired by Emmeline Pankhurst. I chose her to inspire my piece because I think she had a great impact on how women are in society today. Pankhurst was the leader of the Suffragettes, a protest group advocating for women's voting rights. I think she deserves to have a monument because she made such a large impact on society and how women are presented today. This is reflected in my ceramic pot because I used lots of the colours of the suffrage movement and I used motifs and sgraffito inspired by the movement.
