How to cut the carbon in a building’s lifecycle

Iron rods used in construction

London’s buildings begin to generate carbon long before any ribbon is cut. The manufacture of building materials, their transport to the site and construction all contribute damaging emissions.

As an example, for every tonne of steel produced, two tonnes of carbon is emitted.

This ‘embodied carbon’ extends to other phases in a building’s lifecycle too, including refurbishment, demolition and eventual disposal of any rubble.

The London Assembly Environment Committee will tomorrow explore ways to cut this carbon toll through better design, recycling and materials technology.

The following guests will attend:

  • Simon Sturgis, Founder, Sturgis Carbon Profiling
  • Jane Wakiwaka, Sustainability Manager, The Crown Estate
  • Robbie Epsom, Sustainability Consultant, WSP
  • Julie Godefroy, Head of Sustainability Development, Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers
  • Rhian Williams, Senior Strategic Planner, GLA
  • Anne-Marie Robinson, Senior Policy & Programmes Officer, GLA

The meeting will take place on Thursday 20 September at 2:00pm in The Chamber, at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed via webcast or on our YouTube channel.
