Caroline Russell responds to the outcome of Commons vote on third runway at Heathrow. The London Assembly is united in its opposition to a third runway.
Caroline Russell said:
MPs voting yesterday cynically put the interest of big business ahead of the health and well-being of Londoners.
The reality is that no amount of sound insulation will compensate Londoners for the noise they will be exposed to when outdoors in their streets or gardens. This will be particularly bad during hot summer months when Londoners face the option of keeping their windows shut to block out noise, or opening them to be woken up by night or early morning flights.
If the Government was serious about keeping to the Paris Climate Change agreement, they would not be pressing ahead with climate wrecking airport expansion, that poses the greatest threat to our economy and all aspects of our lives.
The London MPs who disgracefully sat on the fence or supported a third runway clearly failed to consider the climate change implications and have failed to stand up for the health and well-being of their constituents.”
