Cash Fares on Buses

  • Reference: 2012/3713
  • Question by: Murad Qureshi
  • Meeting date: 21 November 2012
The Evening Standard recently reported on the humiliation suffered by a bus passenger (Mark Barwell) with an oxygen tank who was refused carriage on a London bus because he offered to pay for his fare with a £5 note. Previously you have told me the driver should issue an Unpaid Fare Notice in this situation. Clearly this is not happening in practice, so what do you plan to do to ensure procedures are followed properly in future so other passengers do not suffer this distressing inconvenience?

"Johnson, London's Tory mayor, helped launch the report and welcomed its findings but did not endorse them, a spokeswoman said." Can you please explain this seeming disparity?
