Notting Hill Carnival (Supplementary) [4]

  • Question by: Angie Bray
  • Meeting date: 28 February 2001
Surely one of its great advantages is that it would cause considerably less disruption to traffic on key roads into London simply to move it across one road to get it into Wormwood Scrubs; whereas to move it from Notting Hill along Bayswater and into Hyde Park would cause considerable disruption to some very major arterial roads. I am also thinking not only about the north but about the south side, because some people might think it was easier to skip the first part and join the party at the end, and would be attempting to enter Hyde Park from...

No, but I have therefore always recognised that you respect his views enormously. I rather agree with him that Wormwood Scrubs has a charm all of its own. [Laughter.] I often walk my dogs there, so I know it well.

You mentioned Simon Jenkins's article. I read it, too. I had always had the impression that you enormously respected Simon Jenkins. You told me at our first meeting that you had thought of asking him to stand as one of your candidates against me in London West Central.

Thank you very much.

Underground Strike (Supplementary) [3]

  • Question by: Bob Neill
  • Meeting date: 28 February 2001
You will have seen the leader in the Standard either last night or the night before, which broadly supports many of the things you have been talking about. But it makes the point that, if we are to be genuine about giving Bob Kiley a chance, and if your own commitment to standing back and letting him take a lead is genuine, surely you have to give an unequivocal commitment that he is able to do so wholly free from any political interference. Would not the clearest way in which you can do that be by saying unambiguously that you...

Underground Strike (Supplementary) [2]

  • Question by: Angie Bray
  • Meeting date: 28 February 2001
Angie Bray: It is quite clear from what Mr Crowe has been saying that it is not just about safety, is it? He has now said that the next round will be about jobs as well. That can be read as a warning shot across the bows of Mr Kiley, at least. Mr Kiley comes from a strike-free New York, and he must be wondering what on earth is going on when he walks into London, where his own boss is supporting the strikers. As you will know, strikes on the underground are illegal in New York. Would you not...

Underground Strike (Supplementary) [1]

  • Question by: Angie Bray
  • Meeting date: 28 February 2001
This question turns out to be extremely timely, because yet again we read this morning about news of further strike ballots among Underground staff. People could be forgiven for thinking that it is slightly more than a coincidence that this latest bout of strikes on the Underground started with your arrival as Mayor, given the encouragement that you were giving them earlier on. Some people will be rather regretting their vote last May. This is your opportunity to start rebuilding your reputation with Londoners who were so inconvenienced by the last strike. Will you categorically dissociate yourself from this latest...

Strategic Development Locations (Supplementary) [6]

  • Question by: Andrew Pelling
  • Meeting date: 11 July 2001
I suppose it will be an argument for sustainable development if you can get people to commute out in the morning and in the evening to some of these key suburban office sites. I represent Croydon which as you say perhaps has a false pride in terms of its tall buildings, desire for tall buildings, but it is perhaps in many ways a good opportunity to put some of the tall buildings that might fit in within a Manhattan style skyline in Croydon which might not suit necessarily next to St Paul's Cathedral.

Strategic Development Locations (Supplementary) [5]

  • Question by: Andrew Pelling
  • Meeting date: 11 July 2001
I think you share the Mayor's view of the efficacy of tall buildings particularly in the key transport nodal points. Obviously there is great sensitivity for those developments in Central London. What role to you think some outer London venues have in terms of acting as host to those type of tall buildings? I represent a constituency in South London where virtually the amount of development has been very limited during the 1990s but there is a great deal of space for that type of development. What role would you see perhaps for South London in fulfilling that Mayoral desire...

Strategic Development Locations (Supplementary) [4]

  • Question by: Graham Tope
  • Meeting date: 11 July 2001
Obviously still at early stages. Is your interest generally welcomed or are people generally wary of it? What will be your view if there is even something verging on opposition to your interest?
