Was that not your problem?

  • Question by: Jennette Arnold OBE
  • Meeting date: 28 April 2004
Can I just start by saying: well done. There are not many politicians that set out a manifesto over a four-year period and who are then able to turn to the people who elected them and say that they have delivered for them. Let us have the grace to say well done. Can you tell us once more what the defining moment was for you in terms of standing up for Londoners those Londoners who have been berated in the press, those Londoners who are the backbone of this city, those Londoners who come here to seek safety? What was...

Are there specific things you think you could have done better over the last four years?

  • Question by: Darren Johnson
  • Meeting date: 28 April 2004
Four years ago, you were going around London saying that more road building merely creates more traffic, the politicians have learned their lesson, and we should be investing in public transport and not building new roads.

  • Question by: Darren Johnson
  • Meeting date: 28 April 2004
What do you consider to be your most environmentally damaging decision over the past four years? Would it be the decision to back the six-lane road crossing in East London, the decision to widen the North Circular, the decision to back the destruction of part of Erith Marshes, the decision to back the destruction of part of Spitalfields Market, or the decision, at least until today, to back airport expansion at Stansted and Gatwick?

  • Question by: Graham Tope
  • Meeting date: 28 April 2004
What you have just told is that you described them as Labour's `second eleven" on the basis of knowing Len, Toby and Nicky, which is an interesting point, but the remainder you have found to be outstandingly better than Len, Toby and Nicky. Do you feel you should stop digging at this point?

Job losses in Croydon (Supplementary) [6]

  • Question by: Graham Tope
  • Meeting date: 28 April 2004
Unusually, I strongly agree with all the points made by the previous questioners and confirm, since he is not going to be allowed to do so for himself, that Andrew Pelling has indeed undergone a major conversion and is now being extremely supportive of the extension of the Croydon Tramlink into the other part of his current constituency. Incidentally, whilst we would welcome any of the extensions on Tramlink, the local authority's preferred route would be for the route from Tooting to Sutton and not the heavy rail one. Returning to south London, I think it is a fair criticism...

He fought it tooth and nail.

Job losses in Croydon (Supplementary) [4]

  • Question by: Valerie Shawcross
  • Meeting date: 28 April 2004
I recently had the pleasure of meeting with the Croydon Chamber of Commerce. I came away with the impression that there is a long list of businesses in Croydon that are also now expanding, and not just the retail sector but the financial services sector also. Would you not share my view that in terms of strategic investment in Croydon to boost its businesses, especially now that you have identified it as an opportunity area in your London Plan, the best strategic investment would be to proceed with the four extensions to the Croydon Tramlink you have identified as having...
