Well what about the buses? I think that is perhaps a bigger problem, given the number of buses that actually do use Oxford Street and would find it rather more difficult to pass off down some of the other streets.

Do you accept this as virtually a straight copy of the Liberal Democrat plan?

So, have you had any consultation at all yet, before making this announcement on BBC London last week?

I think that the one group of people who are never going to be in charge of Oxford Street, and therefore I wonder why they bothered with this plan, are the Liberal Democrats. It is of course, a Conservative-run council which is in charge of Oxford Street, and I suppose to some extent you have an interest, Mayor. I am interested in your tram idea. There are huge concerns from some of my residents who live around the area so could you tell me where would the buses and the taxis go, if they were not going to be going...

And then go where to get them?

Oxford Street (Supplementary) [10]

Basically it is going to be a bit of a blight is it not, whatever happens, to the people who live in the area if your proposals were to get anywhere close?

Oxford Street (Supplementary) [9]

A lot of these bus journeys happen to go along Oxford Street on their way from a much further a to b. Are you going to be terminating all these bus journeys at Oxford Street and then people will have to hop off, get on the tram, go to the other end, to then pick up another bus to continue?

Oxford Street (Supplementary) [8]

  • Question by: Brian Coleman
  • Meeting date: 13 September 2006
But the answer is not to put it in the residential streets of Bloomsbury?

Actually I seem to remember that quite a number of traders said that they had done their worst trade on that particular day when you pedestianised the whole area. I do not think they were particularly impressed by the quality of the sales they made.
