Safer Neighbourhood Teams (Supplementary) [1]

  • Question by: Tony Arbour
  • Meeting date: 13 September 2006
There are, I suspect, infinitely more people who want to serve in the MPS, who have never done the kind of thing that you have suggested: thrown a punch or the sort of thing which has been suggested, indeed, the kind of thing that it has been alleged that you have done. It must be right, would you not agree, that those people who enforce the law, those people who are involved in seeing that our neighbourhoods are safe and' that London is safe , do, in fact, have a history which makes them exemplars for the people that they...

Mayor, I am glad to see that we are making progress on the Labour manifesto commitment to become cashless on the buses. Just thinking a bit longer-term, one of the things we are going to have to get used to is people travelling on the system who apparently have not paid. I wondered if there were things that we could do on that front? In recent travels to Vienna and Singapore, you notice people just jumping on and off quite happily, and no one really suspected them of anything more than trying to get from a to b as quickly...

I will deal with it fairly briefly because I think you have covered most of the ground already, Mayor. John Biggs (AM) talked about 'dragging people kicking and screaming to buy Oyster cards.' Is it a lot of use advertising if, in practical terms, they find it difficult to get hold of Oyster Cards, because of the outlets not being there? I am thinking particularly of areas which are not well served by the Tube.

Do you have a feel for the cost of such a scheme?

  • Question by: Roger Evans
  • Meeting date: 13 September 2006
Surely if you are going consider giving away Oyster Cards without asking people to pay a deposit, then you should be making that offer freely available across the board to Londoners, rather than on particular routes or to particular groups that you deem suitable?

Oh, Mr Mayor please do not. Just do not.

We were told £1 to make, or £1.50.

  • Question by: Sally Hamwee
  • Meeting date: 13 September 2006
On the suggestion of actually supplying cards: I accept that some people seeing TfL advertising might be persuaded by your sweet smile, others might be persuaded by being given a card and trying it. You said that £2 million was going to be spent on this advertising campaign, would not it be useful to spend at least part of that money not on advertising, but on some practical step like that?

Is work going on to try and extend the network then?
