It’s vital that the London Fire Brigade has the resources it needs to keep Londoners safe. After the Grenfell fire I wrote to the Home Secretary asking her to provide them with the support the fire brigade needs to do the job.
I am disappointed the response from the Home Secretary appears to be based on advice which includes several major miscalculations.
As a result it utterly fails to acknowledge hundreds of millions of pounds of Government cuts to our spending power, or the further savings that are required to balance the budget I inherited from the previous Mayor.
I will be responding to the Home Secretary in due course, but it remains the case that without the additional funding we need to act on the advice of the London Fire Commissioner, London will face very serious difficulties in maintaining and improving the way the London Fire Brigade protects our city. Londoners will feel let down by the Government’s intransigence on this vital issue.
