Overcoming the hurdles Londoners face to keep active

It is recommended that adults should undertake at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity every week, such as brisk walking or cycling.

But research by Transport for London found that almost half of Londoners say that cycling is 'not for people like me', while 24% of Londoners say they do not have enough time to walk.

A lack of everyday physical activity is a key driver of health inequalities. What barriers do Londoners face in engaging in everyday physical activity, including those who cannot walk or cycle?

In the first of two meetings on healthy living, the London Assembly Health Committee will meet tomorrow to examine the importance of everyday physical activity for the health of Londoners. The guests are:

  • Vicky Hobart, Greater London Authority (GLA) Group Director of Public Health & Deputy Statutory Health Adviser
  • Dr Will Norman, Walking and Cycling Commissioner
  • Dr Katie Hunter, Consultant in Public Health, GLA
  • Tanya Braun, Head of Policy and Communications, Living Streets
  • Sarah Dewhurst, Lead Allied Health Professional for the Physical Activity Clinical Champions Programme
  • Alison Gordon, Head of Prevention Services, Age UK Enfield
  • Alan Benson MBE, Co-Chair of Trustees, Transport for All

The meeting will take place on Thursday, 6 October from 10am, in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
