Increasing cases of VAWG and hate crime on public transport
In 2024-25, British Transport Police (BTP) recorded increases in violence against women and girls (VAWG) across its national network compared to 2023/24:
- 10 per cent increase in sexual offences (from 2,437 to 2,670)
- 5 per cent increase in violence and intimidation against women and girls (from 11,466 to 12,082)
- 6 per cent increase in sexual harassment (from 1,832 to 1,950)1
Transport for London (TfL) data for January to August 2024 reported that hate crime on London’s public transport network rose by 27.8 per cent compared to the same period in 2023, increasing from 1,551 to 1,982 offences.2
The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will meet tomorrow to question the Met, British Transport Police and TfL on the work they are doing to prevent and respond to VAWG and hate crime on public transport.
The Committee will then hold a question and answer session with the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, looking at the Angiolini Inquiry part 2 and Met Police custody.
