Between Towers and Terraces: Assembly investigates mid-rise housing
Mid-rise housing — typically between four and eight storeys — could offer a compromise between low-density sprawl and high-rise towers.
It has been argued that mid-rise developments can increase housing supply within existing neighbourhoods while maintaining a more human scale and manageable infrastructure demands.
Tomorrow, the London Assembly Planning and Regeneration Committee will meet to continue its investigation into mid-rise developments, the challenges and opportunities with this type of development, how it could help London meet its housing targets, and what tools and policies could make mid-rise the default for sustainable growth across London.
The session will consider how “gentle density” can be achieved in practice — from defining what counts as mid-rise in different contexts, to exploring who new mid-rise housing should serve, and how design-led planning could make it more viable and widely accepted.
The guests are:
Panel one
- Michael Clarkson, Planning Policy Manager, Royal Borough of Greenwich
- Angus Michie, Managing Director London residential strategy, SevenCapital
- Simon Bayliss, Managing Partner, HTA
