Better design for Londoners

65% of Londoners feel they lack influence over local development.1 Research shows that 85% of people believe the design quality of buildings and public spaces improves quality of life. Yet dissatisfaction persists.

The London Assembly Planning and Regeneration Committee meets on Monday to examine whether new developments reflect what Londoners want from the city’s built environment.

At the meeting, the Committee will explore what types of homes and public spaces Londoners prefer, how far current development aligns with those preferences, why gaps persist, whether regulations constrain the delivery of designs residents favour, and how well current engagement tools give Londoners real influence.

The guests are:

Panel 1:

  • Saffron Woodcraft, Faculty Lead for Public Policy, UCL Bartlett School
  • Lucy Bush, Director of Research and Participation, Demos
  • Robert Kerr, Design Director, ADAM Architecture
  • Robert Kwolek, Senior Architectural Designer and Project Manager, Create Streets

Panel 2:

  • Dinah Roake, Chair, London Housing Panel
  • Sarah Considine, Head of Design Unit, Greater London Authority (GLA)
  • Holly Lewis, Co-Founding Partner, We Made That, and Mayor’s Design Advocate
  • Karen Montgomerie, Team Leader, Strategic Planning, GLA
  • Marissa Ryan-Hernandez, London Plan Manager, Strategic Planning, GLA

The meeting will take place on Monday 8 December 2025 from 2pm in the Chamber at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
