Amid the news of Deputy Mayor for Policing Sophie Linden’s resignation, Zoë Garbett AM released the following statement directed at London Mayor Sadiq Khan as he seeks to fill the position:
“I thank the Deputy Mayor for her diligent service for Londoners. Together with my Assembly colleagues, I look forward to working with and scrutinising the Mayor’s new appointee on behalf of Londoners here at City Hall.
“In undertaking your decision, Mr. Mayor, I urge you to prioritise the appointment of a new Deputy Mayor who is committed to addressing the impact of disproportionate use of stop and search, who understands that the Met is institutionally racist, and who is focused on crime prevention.
“This is a real opportunity to heed the lessons learned from the many inquiries, surveys, and hearings during your Mayoral tenure, particularly in addressing violence against women and girls, and set London on a path towards crime prevention and a more just policing era.”
