Discussion | Supporting more Londoners into good jobs

Many Londoners have told us it’s hard to know where to look for help with jobs, skills and careers. Support is often found in different places, and it’s not always clear what’s available or where to go.  

A key part of the Inclusive Talent Strategy will be to make sure that Londoners can get into vital jobs that will help London’s economy grow.  

To make this simpler for Londoners, City Hall is exploring new ways to bring support together. That way, everyone can access the help they need, whether online or in-person.

This could include:

  • An online platform that acts as a ‘one stop shop’ to job vacancies, training, and career guidance across London.
  • More joined-up in-person support, where help with work, learning and advice is available whenever you first seek it. 

Join the conversation

  • What do you think of these ideas? What would you find more accessible? 
  • What would encourage you to use these services? What wouldn’t?
  • What sort of opportunities or information would you expect to find, or need the most?
  • What currently stops you from accessing employment or skills support?
  • Thinking about your future career, what are your main concerns or worries about London’s job market?

Good idea to make it online, probably as an mobile optimised app, which seems to be how young people engage these days

I would only be interested in in person support, if it was online I wouldn't engage

I would need IT skills, as PCs hadn't even been invented when I trained

I already have a full-time job and am nearing retirement so don't feel I need this support

I don't have concerns for my own future career as I am at the end of my working life, but am concerned by the growing social inequality

Your survey was so badly written, it was virtually senseless. This is a perfect example of why it is so hard for many people to access help. Firms, job descriptions, person specifications are completely unclear and rely on readers ability...

We need propper homes in London that are aaffordable, not matchboxes creating a dead ccommunity.

also after being unemplyed, i started a job and basically am wors off than i was on universal credit.

Also with ULEZ it has killed so many trade...

Also with ULEZ it has killed so many trade jobs, for no benefit to londoners. Air qquality is whorse than every. And the 20mph speed limit.

 

Also are schools nlonger teach our children to use there hands.

 

I am aalso cconcerned about the apealing qquality of the aaffordable hone being built.

I am in the bbuilding ttrade, aand see the bad wworkmanship aand bad ddesign aand cconstruction, i wwould not want to be buying tthese hones aso they will be falling apart in 20years or less.

 

Alsowhat's wrong with your site, it keeps duplicating letters.

I have no problem with other sites.

Choosing the right career starts at school- better information about which jobs are more accessible and which subjects to study to get there. At sixth form, most have no idea what work...

Choosing the right career starts at school- better information about which jobs are more accessible and which subjects to study to get there. At sixth form, most have no idea what work they want to do. Therefore more career officers in school to help teenagers to choose their subjects. Great to encourage students to be creative, however a master’s degree in an unemployable subject is a waste of time and resources on top of a student loan.

Secondly, better comms on where to seek help and training/ how learning can help secure a job. How about using libraries to run career workshops for writing CVS, interview skills or local employers setting out their vacancies during these workshops?

Voluntary work while learning or job hunting to provide practical work skills .

I believe that would contravene so many inclusivity laws that in the unlikely event that it is true you should take action.

I don't think support is the real problem. The real problem is having too few jobs to begin with. You often have 50+ people applying for 1 vacancy these days and it is not like the candidates aren't qualified, just that companies are barely...

I don't think support is the real problem. The real problem is having too few jobs to begin with. You often have 50+ people applying for 1 vacancy these days and it is not like the candidates aren't qualified, just that companies are barely hiring. Without getting to the root of this no amount of support would mean much as people still won't be hired, especially since companies always prioritise experience over potential or training.

Another issue is transport, with how expensive commuting is compared to other major cities like Tokyo or Hong Kong people are dedicating a noticeable portion of their income to get to work, which isn't great.  You also have workplaces that are double the time to get to on public transport or are just oupright inaccessible, unfortunate situation that really shouldnt be happening in the capital city.

With that said, I think it is possible for you to improve on the gov.uk's existing find a job website for Londoners by posting civil service and council jobs up there while also streamlining the process. Too often candidates are redirected to another website, make a new account for each branch and fill out lengthy forms with information already on a CV. If these processes could be improved both cantidotes and hirers would have an easier time.

Housing costs and availability are the main issues; they put up costs for businesses and destroy welfare budgets.

The Government seems to be planning a new huge "sink" estate made up of "affordable" (substandard / shoebox ) housing all across the green belt, 

This appears also to be using a PFI private enterprise style deal  with a building company ( Barratt).

This scheme will avoid the more stringent regulations Government built housing must adhere to, under regulatory framework under the Building Safety Act 2022 but the build quality will be what they can get away with, using the tragic-magic word "emergency".

It will allow a swapping of emergencies, one for another, I expect.

PFI, Chop down trees ? What could possibly go right?  Do they learn nothing ?

 

In the meantime I hear the UK is set to freeze not cook as a result of global warming interrupting the gulf stream - so we need to change the building regulations over to Swedish grade levels of insulation, because global warming is now inevitable.

China. Russia and the US are going ahead without cutting emissions, and the world's forests are being removed by the afforested countries as part of their economic development.

We need to plan ahead, not pretend.

I am in my 50's struggling to return to work. I have heard of a charity called, Room for Work, that runs employability courses for my age and demographic, but it is not available across London, only in Richmond and Kingston. I live too far...

I have heard of a charity called, Room for Work, that runs employability courses for my age and demographic, but it is not available across London, only in Richmond and Kingston. I live too far away. How can we add this valuable charity service to be available across London. The courses are free to the user. My friend was out of work for a year and has found a job she loves and credits the course with helping her. Please advise?

I have done the same but I do think our position is relevant.  I am 60 and have left the workforce by choice 7 years early.  If London wants to maximise the potential of its workforce it should want to use those years.

What would tempt me...

What would tempt me? certainly not a full time role but I might be prepared to do a flexible, say 50-75 days p.a. or some mentoring.

The biggest problem is housing is so expensive that it makes me want to look outside London for  job as I will never be able to afford anything other than a flat share for the rest of my life in London. Even "good jobs" don't pay enough to...

Even "good jobs" don't pay enough to be able to afford the most basic of housing in London so why bother improving my skills  here - I might as well just move away from London.
