Will devolution flick the power switch on for London?

Created on
17 June 2015

This meeting took place on 18 June 2015. Read the transcript here.

Devolution isn’t just for Scotland: alongside the Mayor’s call for fiscal devolution to London government, increasingly groups of London boroughs are campaigning for increased powers for their sub-region.

In March, east London boroughs called for devolved powers over skills training, transport and helping people find jobs.

More recently, south London boroughs called for similar powers – including the ability to control local bus services.

What are the pros and cons of devolution to groups of boroughs – as opposed to either devolving to the Mayor, or to individual councils?

Will it encourage independence and unlock growth – or could it mean poorer areas get less money?

The Devolution Working Group will tomorrow hear from the following guests on their calls for devolution to east and south London respectively:

Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of LB Newham and Chair of the Growth Boroughs

Stephen Alambritis, Leader of LB Merton and Chair of the South London Partnership

The meeting will take place tomorrow, Thursday 18 June from 9.30am in the Chamber, City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend. The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
