News from Unmesh Desai: Local groups urged to bid for National Park City Festival Fund

12 March 2019

Community groups, local businesses and residents are encouraged to bid for a City Hall grant to host a local activity during this year’s National Park City Festival. Local London Assembly Member, Unmesh Desai AM, is urging local people to get involved and submit their bids before the deadline of Thursday 21st March.

The Festival is due to take place between 20th and 28th July to encourage Londoners from all communities to celebrate and engage with the capital’s green spaces.

Local organisations, businesses and residents can apply for a share of the £50,000 National Park City Festival fund. Bids can be made for small or large grants, either £200-£500, or £500-£2,000.

This funding can be used to go towards hosting community activities and events during the week, which promote environmental, cultural and health and fitness initiatives in London’s outdoor spaces.

The Mayor of London is setting the wheels in motion for the capital to become the world’s first National Park City and comprise over 50% of green space by 2050. As part of this, City Hall is funding tree planting initiatives and strategic green infrastructure projects through a £12 million Greener City Fund.

Local London Assembly Member, Unmesh Desai, said:

“Our green spaces, of all sizes, are hugely beneficial for Londoners in terms of health and wellbeing. Green spaces contribute to cleaning up our air, cooling down our city and encourage Londoners to take up more walking and cycling as part of their daily routines.

“It is only right that we should highlight and celebrate the incalculable value of our parks, urban forests and outdoor spaces and seek to expand their scope across our capital.

“The National Park City Festival is a chance to engage members of the community in all of the opportunities that green spaces in Tower Hamlets have to offer.

“I urge as many local organisations, businesses and residents as possible to get involved in hosting an activity and submit their bids for a grant without delay”.
