Trans and gender-diverse people are often faced with significant challenges when it comes to accessing healthcare and experience poorer health outcomes.
Experiences of discrimination and unequal treatment include inappropriate diagnoses, denial of treatment, and Trans Broken Arm Syndrome – when a healthcare provider assumes that all medical issues are a result of a person being trans.
The London Assembly Health Committee will meet tomorrow to explore the healthcare experience for trans and gender-diverse people. The Committee will consider four key areas:
- Improving awareness, attitudes and communication of the clinical and non-clinical workforce
- Developing education, guidance and training of clinical and non-clinical workforce
- Screening services for cancer
- Patient records
The guests are:
- Rico Jacob Chace, Director, TransActual UK
- Michelle Ross, Founder, cliniQ
- Dr Kamilla Kamaruddin, GP in Gender Health Care GIC Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust and East of England Gender Service
- Dr Alison May Berner, Specialist Trainee and Academic Clinical Fellow in Medical Oncology and part-time Speciality Registrar in Gender Medicine
- Ryan Smith, Pride in Practice Manager, London and the South East, LGBT Foundation
The meeting will take place on Thursday, 25 November from 10am, in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
