The gig economy and financial exclusion in London

The coronavirus crisis has highlighted the fragile financial situation facing many Londoners, such as gig economy workers and those who are unbanked.

Gig economy work is frequently in the spotlight amid debate over the rights of its workers. There is a greater proportion of gig economy workers based in London than in other parts of the country – one survey found that 27 per cent of all gig economy workers were based in London [1].

Estimates suggest that between 200,000 and 260,000 adults in London do not have access to a bank account [2]. With a push to a more cashless society, how can we make the capital a more inclusive city for unbanked Londoners?

The London Assembly Economy Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss economic insecurity, including financial exclusion and the gig economy. The guests are:

Panel 1 – The gig economy

  • Rajesh Agrawal, Deputy Mayor for Business
  • Sian Williams, Director of Policy and Innovation, Toynbee Hall
  • Andy Chamberlain, Director of Policy, IPSE
  • Max Dewhurst, Member, Independent Workers Union of Great Britain

Panel 2 – Financial exclusion

  • Sian Williams, Director of Policy and Innovation, Toynbee Hall
  • Abigail Wood, Chief Executive Officer, Age UK London

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 10 November from 10am, in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
