To help stop the spread of COVID-19 across London, Londoners were advised not to use public transport. The steep decline in revenue is anticipated to equate to a loss of over £4 billion for TfL in 2020-21.
Current usage as of 28 September was 34 per cent on Tube services and 57 per cent on bus services compared with last year. Ridership, TfL believes, is expected to recover to 80 per cent in 2021-22.
Data shows that the number of Londoners using public transport fell sharply in response to Government measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 including people being told to work from home where possible. Since mid-March there have been times where TfL saw a 95 per cent reduction in journeys on the Tube and an 85 per cent reduction in journeys on buses.
Tomorrow, the London Assembly Transport Committee will hold a Q&A session with the TfL Commissioner, Andy Byford, at 2pm.
Topics for discussion will include:
- Vision for London’s transport network
- COVID-19 measures and Londoners’ safety
- Mayor’s Transport Strategy and Crossrail
In line with Government advice, this meeting will take place virtually.
Media and members of the public can watch the meeting live here.
