Tackling the gender gap in STEM

STEM studies
Created on
21 February 2020

Girls continue to outperform boys in most STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at GCSE level, but they are still under represented in the uptake of STEM at different levels of education.[2] [3]

The courses with the widest gender gap are:

  • Physics: 17.1 per cent of male student entrants compared to only 4.4 per cent of female entrants;
  • and maths: 39.5 per cent of male student entrants compared to 22.8 per cent of female entrants.[4]

Why do gender inequalities exist in STEM? What solutions are there? How can the Mayor help address gender inequality?

The guests for this section of the meeting are (from approx. 3:00-4:00pm):

  • Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE, CEO and co-founder of Stemettes
  • Bukola Thompson, Software Developer, YouLend
  • Chimene Peddie, Head of Enterprise, Hornsey School for Girls
  • Staynton Brown, Head of Diversity & Inclusion and Talent, Transport for London
  • Dr Julie Moote, Senior Research Fellow, ASPIRES, UCL Institute of Education

In the first part of the meeting the London Assembly Education Panel will also discuss the devolution of the Adult Education Budget to the Greater London Authority (GLA) with:
