Statement on High Speed 2

Created on
11 February 2020

On behalf of the Transport and Environment Committees, Navin Shah AM and Caroline Russell AM, said, in response to the Government’s announcement on HS2:

“The Government has taken its time deliberating over High Speed 2 and now that the project has been given the green light, we will be looking at plans closely with the Mayor and Transport for London, to ensure that they work for London.

“The London Assembly is generally supportive of the construction of low or zero carbon public transport infrastructure, but we have a number of concerns with High Speed 2, namely with how the rail link will affect London’s local communities and the existing transport network. The way Euston station is re-developed is key to the enhancement and regeneration of the area and we need to make sure that this is done with local people and businesses holding a core role in the consultation process.

“The interaction of HS2 and the regeneration of Old Oak Common needs care, so that the new interchange with Crossrail protects local communities and takes on board their aspirations, while unlocking the huge potential of the area.

“Now that HS2 has finally been given the green light, we further reiterate our support for Crossrail 2. High Speed 2 will put even more pressure on the transport network, particularly at Euston, so it is vital that Crossrail 2 goes ahead without delay.

“We support investment in public transport infrastructure that prioritises active and low carbon travel. The Government must ensure that the project is delivered effectively, on time and within budget, so that public money is not squandered.”
