The Grenfell Tower fire has shone a light on social housing residents not having their voices and concerns heard, in terms of property standards and the day-to-day running of their homes.
- In 2017, London’s social housing totalled 801,190 homes, which is almost 23 per cent of London’s total housing stock.[2]
- London’s social housing is equally distributed between housing associations (407,230 homes) and local authorities (393,960 homes).[3]
- Six local authorities in London have their social housing managed by an Arms Length Management Organisation (98,488 homes).[4]
The Housing Committee will tomorrow discuss good practice in involving social housing residents in their housing. The Committee’s questions to housing providers will take up issues raised by social housing residents themselves at the informal ‘open mic’ event held on 24 May.[5] The guests are:
- James Murray, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development
- Ellen Storrar, Housing Policy Manager, Housing & Land, GLA
- David Burns, Head of Housing Strategy, Hammersmith and Fulham
- Simon Latham, Assistant Director, Environment, Housing, Planning and Regeneration, London Borough of Sutton
- Steve Tucker, Managing Director, Sutton Housing Partnership
- Michael Scorer, Strategic Director, Housing and Modernisation, Southwark Council
- Paul Hackett, Chief Executive, Optivo
- Simon Theobald, Head of Customer Engagement, Metropolitan
The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 3 July at 10:00am in The Chamber (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE via webcast or YouTube.
